Bicarbonate Test

Description
The calculation of the total amount of CO2 in the blood. Enables verification of the breathing function. A role in the assessment of the acid-base balance (pH) in the body.
Testing moment
No fasting needed.
Low values causes
  • Hyperventilation
  • Respiratory lactic acidosis
  • Renal insufficiency
High values causes
  • Vomiting episodes
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory emphysema and breathing failure
  • Respiratory acidosis
  • Metabolic alkalosis
  • Potassium (K) electrolyte deficiency
  • Diuretics intake, such as furosemide
Notes

This blood test should be carried out from Monday to Friday and taken directly to the medical laboratory. The nurse will take the necessary precautions for this test.

Associated blood tests : the electrolytes : Chlorines (CL)sodium (Na) and potassium (K).
