Total Cholesterol Test

Description
The fat in the blood coming from the liver and absorbed in food. Role : in maintaining the membranes of the body’s cells and in hormone production.
Testing moment
A 12 to 14 hour fasting prior to blood sampling is needed. It is important to have a light meal the evening before and to have avoided alcohol in the last 24 hours.
Low values causes
  • The hypolipidemics drugs are meant to lower the cholesterol.
High values causes
  • Hypercholesterolemia – a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases
  • Tobaccoism
  • Inactivity
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Certain drugs
  • Fat rich foods
  • High alcohol consumption
Notes

Complementary tests : HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides.

Interpretation of results varies according to the person’s age, gender and weight.
