To assess the condition of the kidneys.

No fasting needed prior to blood sampling.
Low values causes
  • Liver troubles (hepatic diseases)
  • Too much hydration
  • Meals weak in proteins (e.g. malnutrition)
  • Pregnancy
High values causes
  • Kidney damages (renal insufficiency)
  • Dehydration
  • Meals rich in proteins
  • Certain drugs
Notes

Less reliable than creatinine to assess kidney function.
